The Velocity Trap

Here is the mental model I use: AI development tools are amplifiers. They amplify whatever direction the team is already heading.

The Alignment Checkpoint
The fix is not slowing down. Nobody wants to go back to four-week feature cycles. The fix is adding lightweight alignment checks that operate at the speed of AI development.
An alignment checkpoint is a 15-minute verification at two critical moments: before a feature enters development, and before it ships to users.
Pre-Development Check
Does the self-model suggest users want this? Does alignment data support the hypothesis? Are stakeholders aligned on why this feature matters?
Pre-Ship Check
Does the feature improve alignment scores? Does it move target metrics? Did anything change during development that invalidated the original hypothesis?
These checks add 30 minutes to a feature cycle that AI tools compressed from weeks to days. That is a trivial cost for dramatic improvement in direction accuracy.
