The Three Limitations of Periodic Discovery

Sometimes you need the richness of a human conversation to understand the deeper motivation. The best approach combines continuous self-model discovery with targeted interviews when the self-models surface a pattern that needs deeper exploration.
There is a cold-start problem. Self-models are uninformative for new users with few interactions. For the first 5-10 interactions, you are in traditional discovery territory,relying on stated preferences and general patterns rather than individual self-model insights. The cold-start period is real, but it is also temporary.
What to Do Next

Measure your discovery-delivery gap. Track the time from when a user need is identified in research to when a feature addressing that need ships to production. If the gap exceeds 60 days, your discovery process is structurally too slow for the pace of user need evolution. This number is the business case for continuous discovery.

Before building full self-models, create a lightweight discovery dashboard that tracks three things from user behavior data: what features are being used in unexpected ways (unmet needs), where users are dropping off or struggling (pain points), and what patterns are emerging across user sessions (evolving needs). This dashboard is a primitive version of what self-models automate.
