Reification Is the Right Idea, Applied to the Wrong Thing

Reification, the practice of treating relationships in a knowledge graph as first-class objects that carry their own metadata, is one of the most important concepts in the context graph discourse. TrustGraph popularized the idea that graph relationships should include provenance (where did this fact come from), confidence scores (how certain is the system), temporal validity (when does this fact expire), and drift detection (has this relationship changed). This post makes the case that reification is the right concept applied to the wrong target, that applying these same primitives to user beliefs rather than organizational knowledge unlocks a category of intelligence that knowledge graphs alone cannot provide.
What TrustGraph Gets Right
TrustGraph, building on Foundation Capital’s context graph thesis about enterprise knowledge infrastructure, introduced a critical insight: relationships in a knowledge graph are not binary. A connection between “Company A” and “Uses Technology X” is not simply true or false. It has provenance: where did this fact originate? It has confidence: how certain is the system based on the evidence? It has temporal validity: when was this last verified, and when might it expire? It has drift characteristics: has this relationship shifted over time?
This is genuinely important. Most knowledge graphs treat relationships as static edges between nodes. TrustGraph treats relationships as objects in their own right, objects that carry metadata about their own reliability, origin, and lifespan.
The broader knowledge graph community has grappled with provenance and confidence for years. The semantic web gave us named graphs and reification vocabularies. Academic work on probabilistic knowledge bases explored confidence scoring on triples. What TrustGraph adds to this discourse is the practical synthesis: a coherent framework for attaching these metadata dimensions to enterprise knowledge relationships in production systems.
None of this is wrong. All of it is incomplete.
Where the Application Falls Short
Every example of reification in the TrustGraph discourse targets organizational knowledge. Which CRM records informed this account profile. How confident the system is that Company A still uses Technology X. When the last competitive intelligence was verified. Whether the relationship between a decision and its supporting evidence has drifted.
These are real problems worth solving. But they are all problems of the world model: what is true about the domain, how certain we are about facts, when organizational knowledge expires.
The question nobody in the context graph community is asking: what about the user?
A knowledge graph can track with high confidence that “Account A uses AWS, adopted in Q3 2024, sourced from product telemetry.” That is reified organizational knowledge. Provenance is clear. Confidence is high. Temporal validity is recent.
But when the AI uses this fact to generate a response for the human on the other end of the query, there is no reification at all. The system has no structured metadata about:
- What does this specific user believe about their AWS infrastructure? (Provenance of user belief)
- How confident should the system be that it understands this user’s needs? (Confidence calibration)
- Has this user’s understanding of their own infrastructure changed recently? (Temporal validity of user state)
- Is the AI’s model of this user drifting from the user’s actual current state? (Drift detection on user alignment)
The organizational knowledge is reified. The user understanding is not. The graph knows what is true about the world. It does not know what it knows (or does not know) about the person querying it.

The Four Primitives, Remapped
Reification has four core primitives. Each one maps cleanly from organizational knowledge to user beliefs. The mapping is not metaphorical. It is structural.
Provenance: From Data Sources to Observation Contexts
In TrustGraph’s framework, provenance answers “where did this fact come from?” For organizational knowledge, provenance points to CRM records, product telemetry, support tickets, third-party data feeds. This tells the system how much to trust a fact based on the reliability of its source.
For user beliefs, provenance becomes observation context: which interactions, behaviors, and stated preferences formed this understanding of the user? A belief derived from three months of consistent product usage has different provenance than a belief derived from a single onboarding survey response. The observation context tells the system how much to trust what it thinks it knows about the user.
Clarity tracks this as observation contexts on every belief in a self-model. When the system believes “this user prefers concise technical responses,” the observation context records whether that belief came from explicit feedback (high-reliability provenance), behavioral inference from session patterns (moderate reliability), or a single ambiguous interaction (low reliability).
Confidence: From Fact Certainty to Belief Calibration
In organizational knowledge graphs, confidence scoring indicates how certain the system is that an entity relationship is accurate. “90% confidence that Company A still uses Technology X.” This prevents the graph from presenting uncertain facts with the same authority as well-established ones.
For user beliefs, confidence becomes calibration: how certain should the system be about what it thinks it knows about this person? A confidence score of 0.92 on “this user has deep expertise in distributed systems” tells the AI to generate responses at an advanced level. A confidence score of 0.45 on the same belief tells the AI to hedge, to offer both the detailed explanation and the overview, because the system is not sure yet.
This is not optional complexity. Without confidence calibration on user beliefs, the system either over-personalizes (assuming certainty it does not have) or under-personalizes (treating every user interaction as a cold start). Calibrated confidence enables the system to modulate its personalization intensity based on how well it actually knows the user.
Temporal Validity: From Fact Expiration to Belief Drift
TrustGraph’s temporal validity tracks when organizational facts expire. “This competitive intelligence was gathered in January 2026 and should be reverified by April 2026.” Facts about the world have shelf lives, and the graph needs to know when its knowledge is stale.
User beliefs have shelf lives too. A user who was a beginner six months ago may now be intermediate. A user who preferred detailed explanations during onboarding may now prefer brevity. A user whose primary goal was “learn the platform” may have shifted to “scale production workloads.”
Belief drift detection is temporal validity applied to user understanding. Without it, the system operates on an increasingly outdated model of the user, not because the organizational knowledge changed, but because the person changed. This is the user-facing equivalent of fact expiration, and it is more consequential because a stale fact about a company causes a minor inaccuracy while a stale model of a user causes the AI to feel fundamentally misaligned.
Drift Detection: From Relationship Change to Alignment Scoring
The fourth primitive is drift detection: identifying when a previously stable relationship has changed. In organizational knowledge, this means detecting that Company A has migrated from AWS to GCP, or that a competitive relationship has shifted.
For user beliefs, drift detection becomes alignment scoring: continuously measuring whether the system’s model of the user still matches the user’s actual state. This is the most important of the four primitives because it closes the feedback loop.
Alignment scoring works by comparing the system’s predicted user response against the user’s actual behavior. If the system believes “this user prefers technical depth” and generates a detailed technical response, but the user skips it and asks for a summary, that is an alignment drift signal. The system’s model of the user and the user’s actual state have diverged. Without drift detection on user beliefs, this divergence goes unnoticed. The system keeps generating responses based on a model that is increasingly wrong, and the user experiences this as an AI that “used to understand me but now feels generic.”
This is exactly the same problem TrustGraph solves for organizational knowledge. The difference is the substrate. TrustGraph detects drift in entity relationships. Alignment scoring detects drift in user understanding. The pattern is identical.
Why the Target Matters More Than the Technique
The context graph community has built impressive infrastructure for reifying organizational knowledge. Provenance tracking, confidence scoring, temporal validity, and drift detection on entity relationships represent real engineering sophistication.
But consider the end-to-end information flow:
- Organizational knowledge is ingested into the graph (reified: provenance, confidence, temporal validity, drift detection)
- A user queries the system
- The graph retrieves relevant, trusted, current knowledge
- The AI synthesizes a response
- The response is delivered to the user (not reified: no provenance on user beliefs, no confidence calibration, no temporal validity, no drift detection)
Steps 1 through 3 are thoroughly instrumented. Step 5 is a black box. The system knows everything about the reliability of its organizational knowledge and nothing about the reliability of its understanding of the user consuming that knowledge.
This asymmetry means the graph can deliver the right information with high confidence while simultaneously delivering it in the wrong way for the specific human receiving it. A perfectly reified organizational fact, presented to a user whose expertise level the system has wrong, produces a response that is factually trustworthy and personally useless.

Epistemic Intelligence: Reification All the Way Down
The term for what emerges when you reify user beliefs is epistemic intelligence: a system that reasons about its own knowledge of the user with the same rigor that TrustGraph applies to organizational knowledge.
An epistemically intelligent system does not just know what the user clicked. It knows what it believes about the user (belief state), how confident it is in each belief (calibration), where each belief came from (provenance), when each belief might be stale (temporal validity), and whether its overall model of the user is drifting from reality (alignment scoring).
This is not a philosophical abstraction. It is a concrete engineering architecture with measurable outputs. An alignment score of 0.89 means the system’s predictions about user preferences match actual user behavior 89% of the time. A belief drift alert means specific beliefs need reverification. A low-confidence belief means the system should hedge rather than commit.
The knowledge graph community has done the hard conceptual work of establishing that graph relationships need metadata. TrustGraph has built the practical framework for attaching that metadata in production systems. The next step is recognizing that the same framework, applied to user beliefs rather than organizational facts, produces something qualitatively different: not just a graph that knows what is true about the world, but a system that knows what it knows (and what it does not know) about every individual user.
The Practical Implications
For teams already invested in knowledge graph infrastructure, the implication is not “start over.” It is “extend the pattern.”
If you have already built reification into your organizational knowledge graph, you have the architectural intuition to reify user beliefs. The primitives are the same. The metadata schema is analogous. The drift detection algorithms transfer. What changes is the target: instead of monitoring whether “Company A uses AWS” is still true, you monitor whether “User 429 prefers technical depth” is still true.
For teams evaluating the context graph landscape, the question to ask is: “Does this platform reify the user, or only the domain?” If the answer is “only the domain,” you are buying sophisticated organizational memory with no user intelligence layer. The graph will know what is true about the world. It will not know whether it understands the person asking.
Reification is the right concept. The contribution TrustGraph and the broader knowledge graph community have made to the discourse is real. The opportunity they are leaving on the table is equally real: reification applied to the relationship between the system and the human, not just between entities in the world. That is where epistemic intelligence begins.
