Every interaction where your product learns about a user makes the next interaction more valuable. Over time, this compounds into a moat that competitors cannot replicate by copying features.

The compound effect of user understanding means that every interaction where a product learns about a user makes the next interaction more valuable, creating a flywheel that accelerates over time. The Compounding Mechanism

Understanding compounds through a specific mechanism. It is not magical, it is structural.

Interaction 1: The user asks a question. The system responds with a generic but correct answer. The self-model records one observation: the topic, the depth of the question, the vocabulary used.

Interaction 10: The system has ten observations. It can infer the user’s domain (fintech), approximate expertise (intermediate), and preferred response style (concise, data-driven). Responses are noticeably better, less generic, more relevant.

Interaction 50: The self-model has rich context. It knows the user’s recurring themes, their decision-making patterns, the projects they are working on, and the blind spots they have. The system can now anticipate needs, not just respond to them.

Interaction 200: The product feels like a colleague who has worked alongside the user for months. It remembers past conversations, builds on previous insights, avoids repeating itself, and proactively surfaces relevant information when the context suggests it might be useful.

Each layer of understanding makes the next interaction more valuable. More valuable interactions generate richer observations. Richer observations build deeper understanding. The flywheel turns.

The Retention Evidence

I compared retention curves across three categories of AI products: products with no personalization (generic outputs for everyone), products with behavior-based personalization (click tracking, usage analytics, collaborative filtering), and products with belief-based self-models (persistent user understanding that evolves through interaction).

At 30 days, the differences were modest. No-personalization products retained 35% of users. Behavioral products retained 42%. Self-model products retained 56%. The self-model advantage was present but not dramatic.

At 90 days, the curves diverged sharply. No-personalization: 18%. Behavioral: 31%. Self-model: 52%.

At 180 days, the gap was dramatic. No-personalization: 8%. Behavioral: 19%. Self-model: 41%.

The behavioral products showed the typical decay curve, initial personalization benefits, then diminishing returns as the collaborative filtering signals saturate. The self-model products showed something different: a curve that flattened rather than declined. The longer users stayed, the less likely they were to leave, because the understanding was still compounding.

The Switching Cost Nobody Designed

I interviewed forty users who had considered switching from a product that used self-model personalization to a competitor. Twenty-nine of them, 73%, cited losing their personalized experience as the primary reason for staying.

Not data lock-in. Not integration complexity. Not contractual obligations. They did not want to start over with a product that did not know them.

One user put it memorably: “I thought about switching to the competitor because their feature X is better. But I would have to spend three months teaching the new product everything this one already knows about how I work. That is not worth a better feature X.”

This is a moat that emerges from understanding, not from strategy. Nobody designed it as a lock-in mechanism. It is a natural consequence of compounding user understanding. The product becomes more valuable to each specific user over time, and that value is not transferable.

Why Behavioral Personalization Saturates

Behavior-based personalization, tracking clicks, time-on-page, purchase history, works well initially. But it has a ceiling.

Behavioral signals are shallow. They tell you what a user did, not why. A user who clicks on an article about Kubernetes might be a DevOps engineer researching infrastructure, a manager evaluating technology choices, or a student doing homework. Same click. Three completely different needs.

Behavioral personalization also saturates quickly. After a few hundred behavioral signals, the marginal value of each new signal diminishes. You already know their click patterns. One more click does not change the model meaningfully.

Self-model personalization does not saturate because it tracks beliefs, not behaviors. Beliefs have depth and nuance. The system does not just know that you are interested in Kubernetes. It knows you are an intermediate DevOps engineer who prefers hands-on tutorials over conceptual explanations, who is specifically working on a migration from ECS to EKS, and who cares more about cost optimization than performance tuning.

The Flywheel in Practice

The compounding flywheel is not theoretical. Every product that has built persistent user understanding has discovered the same effect.

Spotify’s Discover Weekly gets better the longer you use it. Not just because of collaborative filtering (which saturates), but because it builds a model of your taste that becomes increasingly nuanced. Netflix’s recommendation engine is famously more valuable to long-term subscribers than new ones. GitHub Copilot’s code suggestions improve as it learns your patterns and preferences.

But these examples use implicit understanding, inferring preferences from behavior. Self-models make the compounding explicit and accelerate it. Instead of waiting for hundreds of implicit signals, you can elicit a few beliefs directly, observe how they evolve through interaction, and build understanding that is both deeper and faster.

The compound effect is the same. The velocity is different. Where behavioral compounding might take months to create meaningful switching costs, self-model compounding can create them in weeks.

Trade-offs

Compounding user understanding has real implications.

The cold start is still cold. Compounding requires initial interactions. For products with low usage frequency (quarterly tax software, annual insurance renewal), the flywheel turns slowly. The compounding effect is strongest for products with frequent, varied interactions.

Understanding can compound in the wrong direction. If the self-model develops incorrect beliefs early, those beliefs influence subsequent interactions, which may reinforce the incorrect beliefs. You need correction mechanisms and confidence decay to prevent compounding errors.

Privacy expectations increase. The better your product knows a user, the more they expect privacy protection. A product that demonstrates deep understanding of a user and then suffers a data breach creates a uniquely damaging trust violation. The stakes of privacy scale with the depth of understanding.

The moat cuts both ways. If your product’s primary retention mechanism is accumulated understanding, losing that data (through bugs, migrations, or policy changes) destroys the moat instantly. The understanding asset requires protection commensurate with its value.

What to Do Next

  1. Measure your compounding rate. Track how much each interaction improves the next. Specifically: does the user’s satisfaction with output quality increase over their first 30 interactions? If satisfaction is flat, your product is not compounding understanding. If it curves upward, quantify the slope: that is your compounding rate.

  2. Design for flywheel velocity. Every user interaction should generate at least one observation that improves the self-model. Audit your current product: how many interactions generate zero new understanding? Those are wasted compounding opportunities. Clarity captures observations from every interaction automatically.

  3. Make the compounding visible to users. Users who can see that the product knows them better over time are more loyal than users who just experience it. Consider a lightweight signal, “Based on your last 47 interactions, here is what I understand about your preferences”, that makes the compounding tangible.


Every interaction either builds understanding or wastes it. Start compounding.
